...there was a shop.
This is a photograph of my great-grandparents grocery and hardware shop, Buchanan’s. You can see my Great Grandmother Annie standing second from the left and my Great Grandfather William standing on the far right with some family members and customers.
Open from 1907 to the mid 1980s in the heritage town of Ramelton, Co.Donegal, this shop sold everything from sliced ham and ‘Robin’ starch to ‘Wild Woodbine’ cigarettes. It was a centre-point of life in the village and has become the centre of much of my work today.
As a child growing up above the shop, I was fascinated by the objects and living history that was so vivid around me. My practice as an artist allows me to once again revisit that fascination, exploring and reimagining the remnants left behind today.
